Frequently asked questions
How often should I have my chimney cleaned?
The frequency of chimney cleaning depends on several factors, including the type of fuel you burn, how often you use your fireplace or stove, and the age and condition of your chimney. As a general rule, it's recommended that chimneys be cleaned at least once a year. However, if you use your fireplace or stove more frequently, you may need to have it cleaned more often..
What are the signs that my chimney needs cleaning?
Some of the signs that your chimney needs cleaning include: a strong, unpleasant odor coming from your fireplace or chimney, smoke entering your home when you light a fire, a buildup of soot or creosote, and a visible accumulation of debris or blockage in the chimney. If you notice any of these signs, it's important to have your chimney cleaned as soon as possible to prevent potential hazards.
Do I need a certificate for my household insurance?
When you have your chimney swept your chimney sweep should give you a certificate to prove to your insurance company in the event of a chimney fire, you have had your chimney swept. More and more insurance companies are requesting this. Your insurance may be invalid if you have a chimney fire with no proof of timely sweep
Can I burn wet or unseasoned wood?
You should never burn wet or unseasoned wood the main reason for this is as the gases rise up your chimney stack, the moisture in the gas condenses on the inner walls of the chimney stack and sets as a hard tar. In most cases, this will not be able to be removed and if built up sufficiently, the tar could catch fire and lead to a large chimney fire. Burning wet fuel gives little heat and may spit sparks into the room. You can avoid this by buying a moisture meter, which helps you to select dry wood. The wood should not have a moisture above 20% - anything higher will lead to problems.
